Steam Trains of Wales - Traditional Inns & Hotels
Steam trains and stunning views are a match made in heaven, and Wales is full of both! Experience all that Wales has to offer in this self-drive tour, taking in the breadth of Wales and its three National Parks, top tourist attractions and hidden areas that only the locals usually get to see!
Today you will arrive in Wales and travel into the beautiful Brecon Beacons where your accommodation for the next two nights will be.
Today travel towards the National Park of Brecon Beacons, stopping near Merthyr Tydfil, for the Brecon Mountain Railway. This narrow-gauge train runs through the Brecon Beacons along the length of the Pontsticill Reservoir, a large reservoir set in the wooded valley of Taf Fechan. On this railway, you can experience remote points of the Brecon Beacons National Park that can’t be accessed by car.
Today you will leave the Brecon Beacons behind as you travel up to North Wales. Visit the town of Bala along the way. Travel on the Bala Lake Railway along Bala Lake, or ‘Llyn Tegid’ as it is called in the Welsh language. The delightful narrow-gauge railway offers amazing views of Llyn Tegid and the surrounding countryside including the imposing mountains of Arenig Fawr, Aran Benllyn and Aran Fawddwy. The wildlife nesting alongside the line is well worth keeping a look out for and includes herons & buzzards.
Snowdonia & Anglesey
Today you can visit the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park. This town is bursting with history; why not spend some time exploring the Llechwedd Slate Caverns and experiencing their famous underground tour? If you’re a bit more adventurous, why not give the longest Zip Wire in Europe a go? Or, for something completely unique, why not try the new Bounce Below–the world’s first facility of this kind? Make sure to allow some time to enjoy the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway, the oldest railway company in the world still operating trains!
Today you will travel down into magical mid Wales, enjoying some more of North Wales’ attractions along the way! Why not book yourself onto the Snowdonia Mountain Railway this afternoon which will take you up the highest mountain in England and Wales? The views are fantastic! From here head on to your accommodation in Mid Wales.
Overnight—Mid Wales/Aberystwyth area
Mid Wales & Cardiff
Today you can spend time on the West coast of Wales, visiting first the bustling market town of Aberystwyth. The Vale of Rheidol steam train departs from the town and takes you 11 ¾ miles from the town up to Devil’s Bridge, a mythical place where it is said that the Devil was tricked by an old Welsh lady. The breathtaking waterfalls here are well worth taking the time to visit! The train itself allows incomparable views of the Rheidol valley. From here, travel on to the capital city of Cardiff.
Today you will have the chance to explore Cardiff. This vibrant city is built around a castle and features plenty of impressive historic buildings to visit as well as handsome parks and gardens. Why not spend some time at St Fagans, one of Europe’s leading open-air museums? This National History Museum explores all aspects of how people in Wales have lived, worked and spent their leisure time.
After your final Welsh breakfast, your journey sadly comes to an end.
