Depart Dublin’s historic Heuston Station by train and travel southwest through the lush landscapes of Kildare and Tipperary, passing stud farms, the Curragh racecourse, and historic Thurles, birthplace of the Gaelic Athletic Association. At Limerick Junction, change trains with your Railtours Ireland host and continue into the vibrant city of Limerick.
A short city tour introduces you to Limerick’s rich heritage, from the medieval King John’s Castle on the River Shannon to connections with Frank McCourt, Terry Wogan, and Richard Harris. Passing Thomond Park, home of Munster Rugby, you then continue to the 15th-century Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, a wonderfully restored fortress surrounded by a recreated historic village.
After lunch in a traditional pub, the journey continues to the dramatic Cliffs of Moher, soaring above the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy time to walk the cliff paths and take in the spectacular views before following the scenic coastal route along the limestone landscape of the Burren. Pass through charming villages such as Ballyvaughan and Kinvara before arriving in Galway, where your hotel is conveniently located beside Eyre Square and the train station.
After a leisurely breakfast, set out from Galway on a full-day tour of Connemara, one of Ireland’s most unspoilt and breathtaking regions. Passing through Moycullen and Oughterard on the shores of Lough Corrib, the landscape quickly transforms into a tapestry of lakes, valleys, and mountains.
At Maam Cross, see a replica of the cottage from The Quiet Man before continuing through dramatic scenery to Leenane, Kylemore Abbey, and Letterfrack. Enjoy a visit to Kylemore Abbey & Gardens, a 19th-century castle nestled by a tranquil lake, with time for lunch and a chance to browse its craft shop. The route continues through the colourful town of Clifden, long a favourite holiday destination, and on to Derrygimlagh Bog, site of the historic Alcock and Brown transatlantic landing in 1919.
Returning via Maam Cross, the tour winds south through Rossaveal, a busy fishing port and gateway to the Aran Islands, before travelling along the shores of Galway Bay through the Gaeltacht villages of Inverin and Spiddal. With sweeping views of the Burren and Clare hills across the bay, you’ll arrive back in Galway to board your reserved train for Dublin, concluding your journey with an evening arrival at Heuston Station.
